Message from Martin Knights, ITA President
It was with much regret that we were informed about the recent death of our past President Dan Eisenstein. Dan was a very generous character who was energetic and always available. Past President Andre Assis has written an obituary about Dan in this newsletter and Andre has expressed all our feelings towards Dan and his family.Dan will be missed by colleagues, friends and most of all by his family.

Since my last message the ITA Exco and myself have had the opportunity to meet with many members from around the world to measure the pulse of tunnel market.

Prof. Dan Eisenstein passed away
ZDENEK DAN EISENSTEIN, PhD, DSc, PEng, Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Alberta, ITA Former President (1992-1995)It is with deepest sadness that we have to inform you of the death of Prof. Zdenek Dan Eisenstein. Dan died in Vancouver, Canada, on the 1st of June 2009, following a relatively short but intense battle with metastatic colon cancer. 35th ITA General Assembly Press Release
The International Tunnelling and Underground Space Association held its thirty-fifth meeting in Budapest, Hungary, from 23 to 28 May, in conjunction with the World Tunnel Congress 2009 "Safe Tunnelling for the City and for the Environment" organised by ITA and the Hungarian Tunnelling Association. 1100 persons participated to the Congress. 40 of the 55 Member Nations participated or were represented in the General Assembly. ITA Training Course " Risk during construction of urban tunnels in soft ground"
Coordinated by M. Thewes, member of ITA Executive Council, A. Assis, President of ITA-CET and D. Peila, Animator of ITA/AITES WG18 “Training”.About 100 participants attended to the training course. 17 lectures were presented or co-presented by 24 lecturers from 10 countries. 9 lectures were contributed from various ITA Prime Sponsors, other lectures were prepared by distinguished Hungarian engineers, by ITA animateurs or by members of the ITA executive council. Constitution of the Foundation for Education and Training on Tunnelling and Underground Space Use

The General Assembly 2009 of ITA Member Nations has just decided to support the constitution of the « Foundation for Education and Training on Tunnelling and Underground Space Use: ITA-CET » in becoming a Founding Member with a seat at the Council of the Foundation.

WTC´10 - Vancouver Canada
The World Tunnel Congress 2010 and 36th ITA general Assembly will take place in Vancouver Canada; 14-20 May 2010.

Memorial Sir Alan Muir Wood
During the General Assembly in Budapest, the whole ITA family paid tribute to Sir Alan Muir Wood.

Claude Berenguier, with the help of pictures, called up the activities of Sir Alan inside ITA. Then Martin Knights handed up the ITA Plaque to David Muir Wood, Sir Alan´s son who was representing his mother, who unfortunately could not assist.

A booklet recalling the presence of Sir Alan has been published and given to Sir Alan´s son.(ask the secretariat)

 After half a year, renovation of the Longxi tunnel, which was damaged by the eartquake has been completed through more than 1400people’s hard-working. On May12th the one year anniversary of the earthquake, Longxi tunnel was reopened.


8th Iranian Tunnelling Conference
Brief report to be delivering during the closing of the 8th Tunnelling Conference

ITA delegation expressed his thanks and congratulations to the Iranian Tunnelling Association, and particularly Prof. YASSAGHI for the excellent organization of the 8th Iranian Tunnelling Conference.

The UCA of SME Executive Committee has provided a gift of 5000 US$ to ITA in order to assist ITA achieving its strategic goals.

UCA of SME would like to see these funds used to support the broad interests of ITA by enhancing the publishing and communication of the technical documents and research conducted by the working groups of ITA. This would be a significant and tangible product from ITA that would enhance the organization and provide the tunnelling industry with a direct benefit.

Prof. Xia-Ting Feng elected as ISRM President for the term 2011-2015Three nominations for President of the ISRM for the term 2011-2015 were received: Prof. Xia-ting Feng (China), Dr Claus Erichsen (Germany) and Prof. Francois Heuze (USA). Conference on Sustainable Urbanization in the Information Age
ITA continued our very good relations as an NGO with the United Nations.
